Where Can You Buy Shiplap?
While HGTV’S Fixer Upper has come to an end, the Modern Farmhouse and Shiplap trend will forever live on! While the images can flood your Pinterest and Instagram feed, many are left confused on where they can buy the product and spend countless hours researching where it can be purchased. (If this is you, then congrats! We are a national provider of shiplap and we refer to the product as (NOT) Shiplap. Read on to learn why.)
When buying shiplap you want to be extremely careful because there is a lot of confusion and you can easily ruin your design dreams if you order the wrong product.
To understand the confusion, let’s explain what shiplap traditionally is vs. what many consumers call shiplap.
Traditional shiplap is wall board that does not have gaps. Before drywall existed, historic homes would install shiplap using cheap, knotty wood then cover the wood with muslin or wallpaper. It was never meant to be exposed wood. Over time and when the wallpaper is removed you would notice slight gaps in between each board (because moisture had been removed from the wood causing it to shrink).
If you were to order traditional shiplap then you would need to place spacers in between each board which runs the risk of gaps being uneven. While this is possible, it is added labor and frustration when nailing long lengths of lumber. In addition, cheap wood will contain knots and if you paint over the knots, they will eventually bleed through the paint. This is called knot bleed and it’s not pretty. We’ve included pictures below of what knot bleed looks like.
Most likely, this is not what you want and you are looking for a modern, clean look for your dream home. To provide you a world class product, we have engineered a unique Tongue & Groove profile called (NOT) Shiplap. Very similar to a Nickel Gap profile, this product has an elongated tongue to hide the face nail and a stop to evenly space each board. This product is milled in a variety of wood species and can provide the look to align with those inspirational images that flood your feeds.
